Sensory Kits

Richmond Public Library (RPL) is excited to announce the addition of Sensory Kits to the library collection. The kits, created for in-library use and available at all locations, are designed in close consultation with AIDE Canada and Aspire Richmond and are intended to support customers with a variety of sensory needs.

Each kit includes calming items, fidget items and communication tools. A full list of all items included in each kit can be found here. To use a kit, simply ask any library staff member.

About the Sensory Kits

The library is a space where everyone is welcome, and some library visitors can feel overwhelmed. The sensory kits were created to support library customers who need help with self-regulation, who feel over- or under-stimulated, or simply need some extra sensory support throughout their visit.

The items in each kit were chosen in close consultation with community partners, and were selected to support a variety of needs. These include:

  • Weighted materials, deep pressure massage balls and sensory minimization tools (such as body socks, noise-cancelling headphones and sunglasses) to support customers experiencing sensory overload
  • Fidget items as an outlet for anxiety or to offer tactile stimulation
  • Communication cards and LCD writing tablets for customers who are nonverbal
  • Visual timers to support transitions from one activity to another
  • Workbooks to help customers work through their own sensory needs

Sensory kits are available at every library branch. Ask any library staff member if you would like to use a kit.

At this time, sensory kit items are for in-library use only. If you are interested in purchasing any of the items in the kit, you can find many of them at Odin Books or online.

Sensory kit items can be used by all customers, whether they have a diagnosis or not.

No, you do not need a library card to use a sensory kit.
